regarding difficulty:
Many fights feel very easy because the game expects you to abuse dumb enemy behaviour and activities that should not work if the game applied the actual DnD 5E rules.
Balance is kind of broken because the game is too easy if you abuse Larian homebrew cheese and it is too difficult if you play it like a DnD game.
Yeah, I fear there is no way to avoid the Larianesque gameplay.
I think everything could match with a bit more balance.
Barrelmancy is a choice for fun but even diping could be a strategy like another one. Highground and backstab/flanking could be very interresting in such a tactical game if it wasn't THE thing to do again and again with all our range/melee characters.
Shove could also be very interresting if it wasn't sooo easy, such could be thunderwave (I realize in my last playthrough that this spell is completely insane).
I really think Larian's "concepts" are interresting, but I really hope they won't stay THE only good way of playing this D&D game.
I want more choices and their concept would definitely be more choices... if they weren't the only ones that are good.
