I don't mind trying Persuasion on the "wrong" character as that's part of how life goes, but there are certain situations where you absolutely need to be able to switch characters.
If there's an arcane mystery or arcane anything.. you need to be able to let the party Wizard deal with it instead of whoever started the dialogue. It's so frustrating when Gale is literally standing right behind you in the shot while you fumble around with -1 Arcana. Same with many Rogue skills that require expertise like Sleight of Hand. Or if you have a Cleric who is especially Insightful, you might want to bring them forth to assess if someone is lying to you or speaking the truth.
I also don't want a mathematical spreadsheet UI of who is numerally best at what to easily always select the best modifier for every check. It's dialogue, not science. Mouseover information at most.
