It's called "investment in marketing" rather than "money sink" precisely because it usually repays itself with the results.
And yeah, I'm sure they'd be devastated to sell as well as CD Projekt Red.
There were a lot of problems with CP2077, but I'm fairly sure that "spending too much in marketing" wasn't their main issue.
The problem is that they advertised a completely raw project as perfect, ready-made, and interesting, and advertised it very hard, which made it worse for them in the end. This marketing did not bring them a "good result", as it damaged their reputation. Marketing itself is not bad, but not at a time when everything else is VERY BAD. So, yea, it would be better if they invested this money in something else. Sharing priorities wouldn't hurt.
