So, playing through the game with a friend and we hit the room where you have to sneak past ancient guardians and kill the goblins
the game has a mechanic where when one character is sneaking, others will wait (good)
had a character sniping from the top with a bow, end of combat - he ran to rejoin the party, went past ancient guardian, and went down.
I clicked on him, and my other character decided to run to them as well, got hit by the other one.
had to resurrect them with 2/3 of my revivify scrolls

while this was all going on, I could not control any of this with the manual turn's because while the selected character is down, the game assumes that the entire party is down.
(which is dumb regardless, you should be able to enter manual mode regardless of party-state)

upon reviving my last character, my other character defaulted to standing up after using the scroll, causing them to stand up in the sight of the ancient guardian, getting them fried.
3/3 revivify scrolls gone

now - not sure about anyone else, but this seems like an extreme oversight and actually frustrated my friend enough to uninstall the game.
this can be remedied by having a manual regroup button after combat, adding global sneak options, and more.
controls you would see in other tactical games - the reality is, when characters are walking around doing dumb things where the game punishes you, it's a problem.

another solution/suggestion is to pause/manual turn if any character goes down. 7 hells if you can't click the help command fast enough, or you can't swap fast enough to another character because of the false "every party member is down"

TLDR: game needs better party management - AI auto pathing and hijinx ruins the game

That's a nice session report, in a sense. It exemplifies a lot of the current issues which have nothing to do with combat, writing, vision or anything like that.

The game's UI and controls are rooting against you, and you basically have to wrestle with them first if you want to, you know ... actually play the game.

Here, as you said, you had to endure :
  • Party controls : the "one character selected, everyone else follows" paradigm and its explosive interaction with auto-pathing.
  • Turn-Based Mode : so great and useful, except it's often not available when you need it.

It's unclear whether this sort of posts gets a lot of attention from Larian, and what they plan to do about these issues. They are known to look closely at bugs, and some of the "big/trending issues". It might (potentially, perhaps, who knows) be valuable if you add your voice to the BG3 Party Movement Mechanic thread.
