I recently updated with the recent patch (via GoG -- not Steam). The game was playing beautifully before then, but after this patch, it fails to launch. I see the Larian Studios Logo with the Mindflayer head, and then it just stops. I have tried both the Vulcan and the DirectX drivers.

My system uses a AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT video card with 6128M of VRAM. Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10850K CPU with 64G of RAM, running Windows 10.

It is unclear if other changes took place on my machine before the update that would have also caused it to fail, as it had been a couple of weeks since I played. However, clearly, now, it is failing to launch. If I had set this up via Steam, I would be able to rollback the changes per the instructions in the launcher, but I see no similar mechanism in GoG.

Any advise?

It took a bit, but I have a further clue. While I could not open task manager to close the app, and I could not even alt-tab to a different window (the video was still hung regardless of which window I selected), I was able to view the small window data from using alt-tab. From there, I saw a dialog box with this error:

Unable to create file:
\\?\C:\Users\[MyWIndows10UserName]\Documents\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\...

I won't repeat the rest of the path, as it reveals a bit of personal info. The point is, the file already exists, if you remove the leading "\\?\".
So somehow, it has the idea that it needs to create this file -- probably as part of an upgrade process -- when the file already exists.
In addition, it seems to have some incorrect path information insofar as it has a leading "\\?\".

I strongly suspect that there is some .ini file or equivalent I could muck with to remedy this. However, I am not finding one.

Perhaps another clue is that the particular file it was referencing was from a multi-player game.

So again I ask: Is there any advise?

I am a steam user and getting the same thing on windows 10. I have an intel core i7 9700k. If I click on the Baldurs Gate 3 icon at the bottom of my screen I will get a brief moment of game music/game sound the screen will go black then disappear like a crash. However the Baldurs Gate icon will still show at the bottom where you can click on it and repeat, but same results.

Question for @Azair: Do you also get a reference to an invalid path? Or is there any other type of error message you can see?
You might need to hit alt-tab to see the error dialog in a different window.

FYI: I was able to work around the problem by renaming the directory containing the Player Profiles.

C:\Users\[MyWindows10UserName]\Documents\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles

Renamed to:

C:\Users\[MyWindows10UserName]\Documents\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayersProfiles_saved

Now, I can start the game. Will try in a bit to actually launch the game and play it with a new profile.

Given that I cannot expect the prior saved games to be recalled, this is a reasonable work-around, assuming I can create a profile, start a game, save it, exit, then reopen.

In fact, this now works -- I have gotten past my initial issue. I cannot access old save files, but I expected that on the upgrade in any case.
