Honestly, YEAH. The control scheme and tooltips need A LOT of work. I have notice there are some who seem to hate the DnD elements mainly cause they don't understand them (there are some who just dislike DnD elements but I digress.)
I suppose a bit like me with dice-rolls. I've never played anything D&D before, coming mostly from a generic RPG background, and was pretty confounded by their prevalence, especially in dialogue where I'm used to PC attributes being the largest deciding factor; where there has been randomness in other games, it's hidden but I'm still not keen, preferring the "x points in SPECIAL determining pass/fail" type approach.
But I've learnt from D&Ders that dice-rolls are a key part of the whole thing. I still don't like them, but I guess at least I understand why they're there and can tolerate them as long as save-scumming remains a thing! Something I rarely use elsewhere, but failing some dialogue options is just too meh to live with.
Not so much a D&D element (well, probably) is the party controls which are much the same as the Original Sins. This I don't mind so much and actually I found it a lot more convenient to use than e.g. the Bioware games or the likes of Outer Worlds; that said, there's a lot to be said for autonomy of party members but in general I'm fine with it. Probably more a comment for
the WASD topic really, but "I've started so I'll finish" etc and in that regard it'd be nice to have more typical modern WASD controls when zoomed in on a particular character so you're in essentially third-person mode but to flip back to Larian's current scheme when zoomed out. I guess a bit like Inquisition tried to do, but given that it didn't really succeed, I should probably take that as a warning...
Er anyway, I digress so I should probably admonish myself to stay on topic.
