You're missing the point, you're still together in the same world and at the same time you're given the freedom to go your own way, play your own way. You can play an evil character or whatever while your buddy play how she wants. It's not a hard concept to grasp.
Imagine football, do you always have to play on the same team as your friend? It's fun but it's just as fun playing against each other or competing in the same tournament. You're still playing together.
There's more to having fun together than being stuck together all the time.
It's fun when you go to where they've been and get to see their choices and how it impacts your gameplay and the game world too. Without you being forced to do everything. It says you're not the only one who is shaping the game world. That you're not special, it's not fun when you dictate and play how you want to only if you're playing together. Might as well play a single player game like Skyrim that basically worship you, if that's your thing imo.
