I'm guessing it isn't something as simplistic as having two arms, two legs and a head, but I have no idea where it might tell you that information on an 'Examine.' I'm guessing the Main Character and all Companion's are humanoids, but does that include Ogres? Gnolls? Hags? etc.

I ask because I took Charm as one of the warlock spells but realized I didn't really know who to use it on other than those that are notably human, such as Flaming Fist mercenaries, and Myrina's brothers and the odd character here and there.

Great question, the short answer is almost everything that is social/intelligent with arms and legs is humanoid that belongs on Faerun - Otherwise it is an Animal or Monstrosity.

If something doesn't belong on the prime material plane then we get into the Outsiders category - Elementals, Celestials, Fiends (Demons/Devils/Daemons), Aberrations (from the Far Realm like beholders Mind Flayers, and Aboleths), and then you have the Fae like the Hag, red Caps, Dryads, Nymphs etc...if its in a fairy story you heard as a kid its probably a Fae. All these categories matter for spell targets.

Protection from Evil and Banishment really only works on Outsiders.
