It's not as much work as you make out. They could even make it as simple as this:

-Each background, aside from its overtly mechanical features, comes with an Rp-based descriptive feature
-You get a tag for that background
-Each background has at least one, ideally two or three places in the game where use of the tag either in dialogue or in an examination will allow you to succeed automatically or even exceptionally well, where others will need to make checks to do the same.

Done.

Mechanically speaking, It can be as small as a few dialogue/inspection choice lines that bypass checks and rolls that others would need to make, with some supporting flavour text. An additional dialogue branch per background, buried somewhere along the main game story path, that doesn't derail the progression of the video game space at all is not, in reality, a lot of extra work, and it would still be more than they're planning on giving us at the moment. It's definitely not more work than having it there would be worth to the quality of the game experience.

This is definitely needed.

I can agree that there needs to be a better tutorial but forcing it to be based around backgrounds is really limiting. Would prefer them to just make the ship better and not be locked into things that do not fit certain characters. There are too many possibilities for each background to work it in as a tutorial. Maybe add occasional dialogue options since these don't have to be used if they do not fit, but nothing more.

This could be a good idea since like the Baldurian tag option, we could choose to not use the background tag option if it does not fit the character. I would leave out the descriptive feature maybe, since even that might make too many assumptions (a common one is that all criminals steal or are part of/going to be part of a thieves' guild.) Unless they add the custom background, then that could be what we use if whatever they have doesn't fit.
