Just to address some of points raised so far:

- Absolutely suggesting it as a (default off) option
- Default on as part of a high difficultly setting would be cool too
- (for 1-save, ironman-type games, having your save updated after each roll would also work IMO)
- I wouldn't expect this to exist outside of such difficulties tbh. But that's the type of difficultly setting I always gravitate to.

On the points about "why?"

My answer: The game isn't fun without consequences - I could choose not to reload sure, but that is me being "better" than the game. I want to be encouraged to use every trick I can think of to get past situations. It's already bad enough that the internet, wikis etc exist nowadays and I need to resist the temptation to look up all possible responses/situations etc ahead of time. The more of this type of stuff there is, the more it feels like you're having to "work" to make the game fun or challenging.

Someone mentioned X-Com which is a great example of consequences that you have to live with. Another is in D:OS2's honour mode. I'll give an example below (contains spoilers)

One of my favourite gaming moments ever was on honour mode and I took my whole party into that impish micro-universe thing and activated the security protections by accident.

Lava and deathfog start racing outwards from the centre and kill 3/4 of my party members before I can even react (triggering a save). My last guy was stood near the entrance so I had a few seconds more. In a panic I alt-f4'd and sat there in shock with the game closed.

My heart was beating like a drum, I was thinking "oh no, there's no way out, as soon as I load, i'm going to lose my last guy and then my save will be deleted".

Eventually, I had an idea. I went into the options and set a keybinding for the fast travel screen. Then, I took a deep breath and I started my game again - I pressed the hotkey and teleported back to the Lady Vengence just in time before the deathfog hit me. It was such an exhilarating moment that I couldn't have hoped to match in a normal playthrough. In fact, in a normal playthrough the whole event would have just been "oops.. oh well <reload>".

Also, getting my dead party members out of there (again, a problem that wouldn't have existed in a normal playthrough) was super challenging and fun. In case anyone is interested I had to cast living on the edge, use a teleporter pyramid, cast cyclone and then res my dead dude before the buff ran off and I died (repeat 3x).

These kinds of high-stakes moments are what I live for in gaming. It's not for everyone, but for the sake of a little option I thought t was worth asking smile
