My shield disappeared! I can't remember the name of it, but all of a sudden, it simply disappeared. I was walking around with it, started a fight, and when the fight was over, the shield was gone!! Not only that, but when I tried an earlier savegame, it was gone there too! It's like all of a sudden that shield doesn't exist anymore...it wasn't the dragon shield or anything like that...but I liked it because I had charmed it. What in the world could make a shield disappear from the game like that?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" /> I'm thinking I've got gremlins...

Hi Uinenne,
If your shield has disappeared mysteriously, you could have been carrying too many items. That's the only explanation I can think of.

If your inventory is very cluttered, then it could be hidden in there somewhere. Or, perhaps sometime during the fight, you accidentally unequipped the shield and it's somewhere laying on the ground? Also, if your stats are not high enough to wear the shield, then it might disappear from your in-screen avatar (but still in the equipment screen, just showing up as red). I've never encountered this problem, so I don't know what else to tell ya...

There is a bug (which can destroy things) with putting items in a container in your inventory, or picking stuff up after using a potion or spell to boost your strength.
The weight you are carrying is not updated properly when you place an item in a container in your inventory. This allows you to carry much, much more than you should be able to. After moving/dropping/picking up/equipping anything that changes your main inventory, the weight will be re-calculated, you may be carrying more than your maximum weight capacity, in which case nothing will go in your inventory. The same situation can happen after Bless, Heaven's Blessing or a strength potion wear off.
If you are over-loaded and equipping something causes this update, what it replaces will be destroyed. If you drag and drop something where there is a red X, it will be destroyed. I had a very full chest disappear dropping it where there was no red X once. This bug with containers is handy for moving a lot of stuff at once, but is rather dangerous.

I have found out some technical information about this.
While I haven't had specific items I'm wearing vanish, I do have experience with vanishing chests, here is what I know:
Chests register their weight as ZERO when they are open, and they register a real weight when they are closed.
I have had the dark brown, large flat topped chests vanish if you drag them into your inventory, and then place them back on the ground. This also happened with the light brown, circular topped chests. It hasn't happened with any other type yet. I've tested with a few others but nothing happened to them.
So, the idea is, you can cheat on the weight by leaving a chest open and putting stuff in it and then putting it in your inventory, just don't put it on the ground when open in your inventory. I have lost chests full of stuff this way, including the dragon shield (I just reloaded, I wouldn't tolerate losing something like that).
I also discovered some sort of clipping problem when chucking multiple chests several screens away, walls appeared where the chests should have been. (Did you not know you could scroll with the shift button and hurl objects across the world?)
There is no guarrentee to anything, save often, and reload if something occurs.
