Small update, the next rule book for D&D has been leaked through some database digging, Fizban's Treasury of Dragons. So combined with the MTG art its pretty certain that the teased dragonborn subraces (and looks) will be officially released this year (together with some dragon themed class variants and gem dragons).

I'm pretty sure that beholder is Xanathar, and he is a bit.... unique? Eccentric? all of the above.

I mean yeah.

That reminds me of a friend of mine who complained that new StarWars trilogy is aimed at children… as if the originals weren’t. IP don’t always grow up with their audience. I don’t have much DND experience, but as far as I remember they always looked very corny to me. Toyified Tolkien so to speak.

The goldfish is a dead giveaway for that.
Xanathar also has his own card.

I would hold off on expecting them to include all the Tasha's, Xanathar's and other new supplements right off. That should be saved to DLC because otherwise you're setting a moving goal post and making it really hard to finish development.

That depends on what the initial goals were and how much Larian knew about the plans for D&D when making them. For example Dragonborn have not been implemented yet anyway, so it would not be much more work to implement the new versions coming with Fizbans instead of the old ones, if they are implemented at all.

Also implementing new models and classes which came with new books is easier than implementing rules and mechanics changes like how Tasha made race completely irrelevant because everyone must be the same for reasons.
So there certainly will not be a blanked adoption of entire books, but who knows what parts Larian will pick up and what not.

Has anyone ever thought that Beholders do not look hilarious? Some of the silliest monsters ever created, even the black and white picture that really tries to make them look menacing, just does not work for me.

A meatball surrounded by spaghetti laugh

Personally, I still hope Tasha's stuff get added. And as a change it likely wouldn't be too hard because they could just allow us to move them after the game sets them as a recommendation like with feats, a similar menu.

Also like, Beholders are intimidating because of what they can do, not because of their goofy grin.

By the way.
Not only is WotC updating the stats and looks of all the dragonborn (I am still unsure if they will replace the current ones or be a option), they are also heavily advertising gem dragons and their dragonborn variants

Especially as Larian has not implemented dragonborn yet it wouldn't make much difference in using the new look instead of the old one (although the new look is much more varied).
If Larian implements Dragonborn at all. I am still not sure about that.

Gem dragons in general look a bit odd.

But in general, the new dragonborn resemble their dragon "parent" much more closely than the old dragonborn did.

At least the metallic and chromatic dragonborn would look good (See page 1)

Not that surprising when you realize that they just quickly slapped together a full-price EA using DOS engine and DOS-everything so they got the fund to actually get to work on... whatever they're going to work on. It's not because they'd had all the core mechanics in place that they made the EA available. I haven't played the EA but I get the feeling anything that is completely new to the DOS engine hasn't been implemented, or is far from properly functioning.

What makes you think your opinion on a game you’ve never played is valid? As someone who has played both games they’re a very different experience with many system changes and the things they share are welcome additions. There’s plenty of issues with this game but the carry over from DOS engine is not it.

They’re working on a reaction system which, from a game developer standpoint isn’t easy to implement in a meaningful and enjoyable way for players. At a basic level you’d have every enemy attack paused to give you the chance to react. The best implementation I can think of is to que a reaction so that it activates if the trigger is executed. Which is a whole mess of programming to do.

A kind of reaction-que is already there from the start. You can put a few things on reaction and whatever would get the proper trigger first will be executed. Many players didn't like it for the lack of control. Plus in D&D you can transfer all your actions into a reaction as in "I'll wait till that guy will go to our wizard and then I'll rage and smack him hard". And that's something I personally still would love to see at least in form of postponed turn.
