Never mind, I am a dummy, they still do - but it no longer shows in the shop/inventory UI and only appears in the equip menu. Probably something to do with altered tooltips.
Still, it could use better communication - so that you don't buy a metal helmet and find out that it prevents spellcasting for your wizard only after you do.
