Elminster would be an interesting option because he is essentially unkillable. I mean when it comes down to it there are a LOT of creatures, personalities that are/ or should be - out of the range of the players to defeat.

I am interested in seeing how Larian handles that. Can they create a realistic encounter with a demi-power that cannot be cheesed for example?

It's possible, and D&D likes to parade him around. I don't dislike him, but I tend to feel he's a prime example for "Popular Character Hell", ie, a character who is extremely popular and is thus not allowed to have a finished story.

But, Drizzt is an Elf, and he was young at the time of Icewind Dale (sub-century, if I remember right). Cattie-brie is a Chosen, meaning she's effectively immortal as long as the god that chose her lives (and weirdly it's Mielikki, who is not known as being the most sociable or human-concerned of the good gods). Bruenor is a dwarf and though the time for BG3 is a bit later down the line, he could still be around. I don't know how Wulfgar would possibly be still around unless he's also Chosen somehow... possible... I know the lot of them got reincarnated eventually.

I kind of hope he isn't in the game, just because it would be nice to, you know, just let him rest and become one of the background high-level sorts that organizes the up and comers. But I suppose a cameo appearance falls into that "background high-level organizer" type appearance.
