The game also feels a bit sluggish as well... it was really bad on the ship, and though it's improved it still doesn't feel great. I let the game decide my video options (Vulcan, Ultra) but before I start experimenting or turning those down I'm hoping again that the community has some wisdom in this department.

It sounds like your computer might be struggling to process imputs in a timely manner. My advice is go to the extreme; drop *everything* down to the absolutely minimum and see if it changes anything. Alternatively, find somewhere that's 'visually quiet' (a small alcove in a tomb for example) and zoom right in to reduce the stress on your pc, then try.
