After all, it is only luck that we 6 survived. And we saw dozens, if not hundreds of captives on that ship, which seems like way too many people to all be given "alpha tadpoles."
The "fall" cinematic clearly shows supernatural protection interviening and preventing our PC from becoming a red splat on the beach. I assume more or less same happened for other survivors.
It does sound like convoluted and nonesensical plot device though, though there is an unlikely chance that there is a good reason for everything, and things will make sense once is more revealed.
True soul and gith seach for survivors of the ship, so it is not impossible that there was something special that the ship was doing, and it was targetted for that very reason.
