Half Drow, Far Traveler, Divine Soul Sorcerer, Evil Heritage.
Dex 15, Con 16, Wis 12, Cha 16.
Cantrips: Firebolt, Toll the Dead, Guidance, Friends, and Dancing Lights (Half Drow). Spells: Mage Armor, Healing Word, and Inflict Wounds (Divine Soul).
Future Meta Magics: Quicken, Twin, and Distant (great for Inflict and Cure Light Wounds). Future Spells: Magic Missile, Web, Misty Step, Fairy Fire - Darkness (Half Drow), and switch out Healing Word for Cure Light Wounds. I'm going to take Elvin Accuracy- Dex at 4th level.

Unfortunately, a recent interview with Sven indicated that they're only going to get the PHB content done for release (no talks about DLCs or any further material). We did get some non-PHB races, but as for now that's all we know we're going to get.
Although I'm sure/hopeful that we'll get mods for all the other existing classes and races.

Although I'm sure/hopeful that we'll get mods for all the other existing classes and races. True, but that above IS the character I'm playing in BG3 at the moment. There are already mods adding additional classes and sub-classes. The Sorcerer Subclasses mod adds: Aberrant Mind, Clockwork Soul, Divine Soul, Shadow Magic, and Storm Sorcery. There's The Devoted Paladin mod: Oath Breaker, Devotion, Vengeance, and Ancients. There is a Bladesinger mod, and a Hexblade mod. The Expanded Cleric Domains mod: Arcana, Death, Forged, Tempest, and War. Though the Cleric mod hasn't been updated since last year, it stilled worked with patch 5. There are lots of mods that work with the game. I picked the Far Traveler background, that's not in the vanilla game. There is the 5e Spells mod (my favorite) that adds several spells not yet in Larian's version. A Ritual Spells mod (nice for Find Familiar). Two feat mods that add a lot. That's why I can take Elven Accuracy. There is even a mod that adds the Dodge Action.

I am playing a white dragon bloodline sorcerer at the moment.
To spice things up, I decided she has some fire phobia so she never uses fire based spells, only cold and electricity. It's been a nice playthrough so far. Having +3 to AC from the start with a good DEX, you can basically play naked. And the metamagic is quite powerful so I only play with two characters to still get challenging encounters.
One thing I really enjoy besides is the addition of weapon abilities. It adds a lot of diversity in the way you can approach combat, even if with a sorcerer and the cantrips, you could only rely on magic anyway.
Edit: I just realized tonight how OP the sorcerer is. You can basically cast two spells and shoot a bolt with your off hand crossbow in the same turn XD

I think I will embrace the chaos as a drow Wild Mage. Borderline evil, but still neutral. A "bastard" with episodes of conscience. That's actually the plan for the full release. Twinned and Silent Spell (I would hate him to be silenced). If they keep the current metamagic system, careful spell as well. I do want to keep some necromancy vibe about him so his starting spell will be False Life and Magic Missile (later on Chromatic Orb). Cantrips: Ray of Frost, Chill touch, Shocking grasp, Fire bolt/Minor Illusion... Work in progress, I guess... :P

is there anyway to make a sorcerer that uses light armor with melee weapons? I tried doing that, but it just feels like a wizard with a few quirks.

Its scales are better than/equal +1 light armor. You might want to keep the Charisma, Con and Dexterity as high as possible. Drows should be proficient with rapiers. Twinned, maybe Quickened spell metamagic are your best friends. Edit: Giths get shortsword proficiency + medium armor proficiency (superseding the draconic armor bonus) but at the cost of a bit lower charisma.

I'm playing a Gith Draconic Sorcerer with a Melee-ish focus. Have been alternating between shortswords, longswords, and greatswords throughout the playthrough depending on what's available. He's doing pretty well!
Optimistically Apocalyptic

Githyanki or dwarf, eventually you can help the low charisma with Volo's eye (stealing it still works if you don't mind the cheese). Alternatively you could forego the armor and make a draconic drow sorcerer. I think one of the dragons gets you the armor of agathys spell, then you could choose false life (if it stacks) to help a bit with hps in combat. Drow get proficiency with rapiers and short swords (not sure about scimitars?). I am currently playing a wild magic sorcerer and so far it has been lots of fun, looks like it is going to be my favourite class. Even found a reference to the original BG2 wild mage in dialogue with Gale.

there is little choice in this game. Only two subclasses and it is not possible to choose no subclass.

Probably the most fun I have had with a class. The light armor was more for the visual aspect of it... I just hate robes and unless I move around naked I can't cast any spells until I wear something I am proficient in.

I think considering the EA is still limited to lvl 4 I'd just take the lightly armored feat, which gives both +1 dex (or strength) and armor proficiency. I think any race can work with that, considering you can also get +1 cha from Volo's eye.
