I don't know if it's how 5e works but I was also disappointed to discover that rangers summon their pets rather than having to choose one that you have a close bond with and potentially evolves with you in power and abilities. I really like the idea of variant pets for different races but again, I'm not sure how things work in 5e. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this?
