I just found out, that if you take your time in rescuing Volo - for example killing the gobbos in the courtyard, defeating Spike, doing Abdiraks penance, robbing the trader blind - , he will free himself. I was wondering, why his jailor was out in the hall and when I cam to his prison cell, he had already freed himself and left. Found him in my camp on my next long rest. That was kind of funny - it shows, he is not totally useless.
