I personally find the game a bit more enjoyable with a few homebrew rules. It doesn't mean others can't enjoy what they want. When playing a cleric, I do attempt to adhere to some of the tenants of the belief system, inasmuch as I can. Obviously there are game limitations to what one can do, so I can live with it.
