Stop being resonable, that mark on the Count's shoe isn't some careless scuff from walking around his house! It's chalk used only to transport Patagonian guano, proving that he was at the docks last night when the murder was committed!

I think the reasonable conclusion is that Lenore's research is going to turn out being important to the plot of the game.

In my opinion, Rag's not giving enough credit to the amassed evidence.

Lenore has clearly been researching something with antimagic properties. She clearly has ties to Shadovar and studied a Netherese enclave.

Meanwhile, our tadpole is being contained by some sort of stasis and stinks of Netherese magic.

In her journal, Lenore writes that other people would rather kill her than converse with her. This is new. It's what has her writing in her journal, which she never would have imagined herself doing before. Something has had a massive impact on her life.

Ignoring all of this because it's not explicitly spelled out is refusing to read between the lines and enjoy the mystery. The idea that this entire location is an isolated island when it comes to the plot is kind of blind. Normally, I can get on board with some of what Rag has to say, but I don't think his position on this subject is going to age well.

*

I wonder a bit about the poem To the Grey.

What is Lenore's connection to the Duergar?

*

I also wonder about The Roads to Darkness play. I can't help but feel like those three figures might be referencing something in the game, but I'm not sure we have enough to go on yet. Two males and a female, I'm guessing, based off the names. Similar, I suppose, to the Absolute's three Chosen. But the three in the book are all elves, and I didn't get that sense from the Absolute's Chosen.

Then there's a vampiric sense to consider, mentioning teeth sharp as blades. Other descriptions: pale as death, eyes black as Shar. Talks about the road, so slick with blood.

Ok Ragnarok. I can see you came to play. Some arguments were solid, others cow dung. Let's dive in.

Bernard is not Warforged, only Automatron ... therefore Bernard is not self-aware, or in other words he do not think at all ... he simply recedived a comand phrase and reacts acordingly to his programming. wink

Bernard's programming is able to recognize Lenore and react accordingly. Here's what any programmer without a death wish would code :
If kill_phrase and not(me) then kill

I should know, that is exactly how i get to reciting that sentence. laugh laugh laugh

That is also how I triggered the encounter. Point to Rag.

Please dont tell me you are willing to ignore this and keep claiming that she only studied Anti-magic fields for their anti-magicioning effects. :-/

I'm not claiming she studied only anti-magic fields, just that it was part of the things she studied. From her notes :

She created items with antimagic properties. Also other stuff. I bet she also made soup and her bed. None of that is the focus here. What matters is that she definitely made items with antimagic properties.

Yes, she did ... among many other things ... including other mushrooms, flowers, crystals etc ...
All parts of her research, quite possibly ... the only thing that connects them all is the fact that they are all Underdark resources ... why are you ignoring them?

You're correct to point out there's no direct proof Lenore made Omeluum's brew. But imagine you found an abandoned kitchen with a bunch of italian cookbooks, flour, tomato sauce and mozarella. It would be safe to assume the chef tried to make a pizza or two, even if the kitchen also contained pickles and strawberries.

I could, yeah... Especially if I found a book close by called "The psychotropic properties of poppies", and the nextdoor neighbors told me, "if you're looking for poppies, go there. That guy definitely has poppies."

Yeah, that's a good point. I kind of pictured Lenore drinking that Tongue of Madness potion every day for a long time. Maybe that slowly drove her insane.

It's still all just a guess, but because I came up with it it's true and anyone who disagrees is a bad person with bad thoughts in their bad brain.

Dearest Lenore,
I'm not sure I should say this, but your last letter really worried me. Why in all Hells would you tame a bulette? Just because you found it near Myrna's grave doesn't mean that that's a sign. I'm really worried about you, Lenore. A bulette is not a pet. Using it as a guardian is one thing, but you sound quite taken by it. I know you don't want to come back before you finish your research, but if you are feeling lonely, you know my door is always open.

Lots of love and hugs,
Amarith

PS: It really warms my heart to hear that you put the autumncrocus flowers on Myrna's grave. I remember she liked to roll around in them, even though she'd always sneeze after. She was such a soft, loyal dog. I wish there was more I could do.

I believe the the author of this letter to Lenore is Amarith Coopervein.

He is associated with the Emerald Enclave and appeared in the 5e adventure Out of the Abyss. This was apparently a very large adventure, scaling from 1rst level all the way to 15th.

It is also, interestingly enough, the first place where the Society of Brilliance is mentioned.

--the adventure also seems to contain slightly different versions of Blurg and Omeluum. Blurg, for instance, is listed therein as a orog orc, as opposed to being a hobgoblin.

--and rather than Omeluum, there's a mind flayer named Grazilaxx who was a) in the Society of Brilliance, and b) had a deal with a lich that allowed him to eat the leftover brains of victims. It seems clear that these two mind flayers share the same backstory, so it's odd that the name has been changed.

Him being a hobgoblin might be a placeholder for them not having orc or orog models, or just a reasonable use of resources if they're not going to be including orcs in the game.

Being an orog would make much more sense than a hobgoblin being that orogs are of the Underdark, iirc.

Also, it occurs to me that Blurg's dialogue when he mentions Lenore is questionable.

He says: "I imagine Lenore would have them in her possession. She served Mystra as a cleric."

Notice the past tense. She "served" Mystra. As in, she no longer serves Mystra?

Is that why she left her Staff of Arcane Blessing behind?

But if she didn't serve Mystra anymore, why was she called back to confer with "the other clerics of Mystra"?

The change to hobgoblin works for the story, imo. It acts somewhat as a call back to Dror Ragzlin, giving us a juxtaposed view of hobgoblins. It helps to showcase just how different Blurg is, in other words.

As for changing the name from Grazilaxx to Omeluum, though... I'm at a complete loss. Unless there's a rights issue somewhere at play with the name. I don't know why there would be, but it's all I can think of.

For those knowing about Sussur Trees, their magical properties have always been a topic of debate; not only their ability to create an antimagic aura, which is complete enough that even those unattuned to the weave can feel its effect, but also - and most interestingly to those living in the World Above - the way its roots, bark, and flowers can be harnessed to make magic items. Rumors of such items are rare, but spread in settlements bordering the Underdark. Their actual existence, however, has never been confirmed by any of our clerics, or by any other reputable scholars. I hypothesised that these items are no mere legends, and indeed, in this treatise I will endeavour to explain how I myself created items with both antimagic properties, and ones using the magical absorption of Sussur Tree Flowers as a power source.
It just seems quite clear to me what was actualy main focus of her research ...
Not even single word about neither tadpole, netherese magic, metamophosis, or stasis of any kind ... only creating magical artefacts while using underdark materials. O_o

You mean "De Hurst's Diary" ?
As far as i know, she might aswell be talking about general unhospitality of Underdark ...

There is no great conspiracy, just the fact that she is operating on unfriendly teritory. O_o

Then she mentioned her actual work once again ... she was "called back to Baldur's Gate to confer with the other clerics of Mystra" ...
That can aswell be easily explained as she went to Baldur's Gate to show other clerics that using Sussur flowers she was actualy able to create Magical Artefacts ...
And yes, she is specificaly talking about "the ring" ... but since it seems that she never returned, i kinda doubt it was "the ring we can get from Bernard". :-/

Its just matter of perspective ...
To me it seems that you are so focused on what might potentialy ben written between lines, that you forget to read what is actualy written on them. laugh

This is actualy valuable ... thanks for you to telling us. smile
It means that Lenore was probably not a Gnome ... so either gnome that is half eaten in Hooker Horrors nest, and that Deep Gnome from Duergar Camp that have the invisibility RING on herself ... is most likely not Lenore. smile

After all Daddy Halsin is also hardly "typical" elf. laugh

Indeed ... presuming that automatron is even able to work with conditioned algoritm. smile
If he is not ... its: kill_phrase > kill ... wich is exactly what we get. laugh

So i dare to come to conclusion he was not able. :P :P :P

Just said differently. laugh

Of wich we didnt find any ... except single mention in single book.
Is it possible that Lenore was cooperating with Blighted Willage blacksmith?

But we have found staff that allows us to CAST blessing empowered for casters, boots that allow us to CAST slow fall (at will, needed to say, there is no cost, nor any cooldown per rests), and ring that allows us to CAST light cantrip ... we have also found semi-sentient automatron, several automatic mechanized armors, and several magical turrets, that all react on anti-magic field from sussur flower ... and whole freaking tower, powered by magic squeezed out of sussur flower.

Im sory, but when i have all those things on one hand ... and single journal entry on other hand ...
I just cant force myself to believe that antimagic properties was actual focus of her reserach. :-/
It just seems too far fetched ... especialy since the very material she was studying have antimagic properties itself ... practialy all you need to do is wear Sussur flower in your pocket and you just created any meele weapon with antimagic field property, as long as you remain in the Underdark ofc. laugh

That is exactly the thing ... concidering how many things is there to support theory that she was brewing Omeluum potion, and how many other stuff is all over the place ...

It seems to me like, to use your own example, as if you say:
Imagine you found an abandoned kitchen with a bunch of italian cookbooks, flour, tomato sauce and mozarella ... the kitchen also contained pickles and strawberries.
And then come to conclusion that since there was strawberries she was clearly making a cake! laugh

I mean cone on ... even if you decide to ignore things we can find in the barrels, there is at least double amount of different kind of crystals, there is at least double amount of mentioning effects of sussur flowers ... than litteraly two or three mushrooms of this specific kind. laugh
And if you include things we will find in the barrels ... there is sudently MUCH MUCH more other things. laugh

Yeah he do have poppies (i love the word by the way laugh ) ...
Aswell as aproximately 10 other flowers ... crystals ... mushrooms (not halucinogenic tho laugh ) ... and other stuff. smile

Nah, it was just a joke ...

BTW ... just another idea ...
Lenore is suppose to be Cleric, right?
We know from the letter that she had unhealthy relationship with Bulette, concidering it her pet instead of wild and dangerous monstrosity, right?
We also know that there is Medium Armor chestpiece in the Bulette belly, right? :-/
What if ... :-/

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown
Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are! frown
