I have fought Ethel one time with success. She said bye-bye to us... but didn't disappear.
I wonder if it's because I bought her potion of invisibility from the trade button in the friendly conversation that preceded our attack.
I don't intend to go back to an old save to retry any time soon. It was a hard and unpleasant fight.
But if anyone wants to try....
