I decided this run to see what would happen if I met the Gul hunter, Gandrel, before meeting Astarion. Despite intimidating him into telling me he was hunting a vampire spawn named Astarion, this never comes up when meeting Astarion for the first time, I also can't narc Astarion out to him later though this might be a bug=>

I got a possible bug, I killed Ethel in the cottage and went back to the monster hunter to see what would happen. I vaguely remember him acknowledging Ethel being dead before, but this time he just repeats his "Go ahead and meet her" line. This is also the only thing that happens when returning after meeting Astarion.

Point for clarity, I didn't let Astarion join the group this run.

It's probably because you didn't let him join the group. I've met Gandrel before knowing Astarion's a vampire, and you can confront Astarion about it if he's recruited. If I remember right he says the monster hunter was lying. And if you go this route you get a dialogue option to say the monster hunter was right, on the night he tries to bite you. In patch 6 anyway, I haven't tested it with this patch.

That's good, the edge case of making it to the teahouse before ever meeting Astarion is one thing, but not being able to acknowledge one to the other without taking Astarion on board seems a little odd.
