So, the entire party succeeds at a perception check leading to Tav saying "I smell a trap" yet the ambush that follows (wouldn't a successful perception check differentiate between a trap and an ambush?) catches the entire party unawares and they are surprised. How does this make ANY sense whatsoever?

context of which "ambush" you are talking about might be helpful...

I know for example (maybe the beholder or duergar at the decrepit village) If you are successful in your perception roll you don't get surprised when they pop out of invisibility etc because unless I throw an AOE to reveal said creatures even with a successful perception check the party gets surprised.

Now where's my pet Goblin?

I think I see what you are getting at... yeah in the case of a CRPG I would think succeeding on perception check should/would negate the surprise round from an ambush...

Shouldn't be necessary but I'm talking about the Oche Jelly ambush which even if the characters fail their roll is obvious just from the dripping acid. Regardless, perception detecting an ambush should negate the surprise.
