The Lorelei is actually a rock / platform high above Germany's (I guess) best-known river, the Rhein (is it Rhine in English ?).

The Lorelei was - according to myth - a lady who was sitting there, over the Rhein and combing her long, blonde hair - thus making the people going by ship on the river to be confused by her - so that they crashed into the stones / rocks that wre then in the river (at this site) (they are rmoved now, but were there).
