They are trying to do both and more. Two obstacles have been the engine and the development team.

The engine has evolved into something that is absolutely gorgeous visually. Somewhere in the code, it was not suited to implement 5e as it was written. They encountered a mountain and made the poor decision to go around. They should have updated the code and blasted through.

The development team are trying to make this story driven (as one aspect). They have made great decisions to be fully voiced and engaging, unfortunately they have never been great at telling stories. They have driven full speed into a muddy road. This is the history of this company: They envision something grand, miss the mark, then backtrack and try again until they get it right. The later is what I admire about them.

I keep saying that I am impressed with their work. It's an improvement over what they have done before and it is fun. It has the potential to meet expectations and more. I was checking back to see if there was an update to see something tangible...back into wait mode I go.

If alot of their "budget" went into cosmetics and cinematics that probably wont end well for a game if it has shallow content. I see longevity for Baldur's Gate 3. The content and the random encounter will be great. Much like Solasta. But if Larian want to stick with fixed/finite combat encounters we probably end up with DOS2 itemization issue as loot are random.
