If the theory is true that he wants his freedom then probably not but I don't buy into that theory. the dead three all wanted to be gods on the mortal planes didn't they?, is that not the ultimate form of "freedom"? The History of the Dead Three, from Jergal's point of view, implies the opposite: Jergal arose from his throne with a weary expression and said, " The Throne is yours. I have grown weary of this empty power. Take it if you wish - I promise to serve and guide you as your seneschal until you grow comfortable with the position." Before the stunned trio could react, the Lord of the Dead continued: "Who among you shall rule?"Maybe Bane was tired of his duty as god like Jergal once. And in case of Jergal he just was minimazing his duty downgrading himself to a seneschal. Actually very clever. Anyone who is familiar with hierarchies, also in the gaming scene such as guild management, knows that the guild leader always bears the brunt and is held responsible for everything, good and bad. The deputy has the better position as a mediator, adviser, puller in the background, aspiring guild leader, etc. If something goes wrong, he can always say that he is only the deputy and is not to blame, but as a deputy he has a lot of power and therefore even more freedom than the leader because he can pull himself out of the atmosphere more easily.

It certainly is possible but Jergal retired because of untold millenia's worth of weariness. He was basically lebensmüde if you understand me right. Jergal was a around for a really, really, really long time. I don't see Bane acting on the same desires though it is seriously possible. If it was voluntary then it is, as you suggest, a power move of a very odd kind. Maybe Ao offered him a choice and he chose mortality because he was tired of the restrictions on his plots rather than obligations to his duties.

Or maybe Bane was never resurrected and his son gained his portfolio and wasn’t interested in the job.

It's hard to imagine that a despot like Bane would just give up all the power he's built up. To be honest I want to know more about Bane's current state in BG 3. With the Zhents there is already a good opportunity.

Or maybe Bane was never resurrected and his son gained his portfolio and wasn’t interested in the job. The 'Bane is actually Xvim masquerading as him' theory has long been one of my favorites, but I think ~100 years would be a little short a time for a god to give up on their job from ennui.
