In the first image, the crossbow bolt can't go through the barrel, so the targeting will force Shadowheart to step to the side to shoot. In the second image, the crossbow bolt can be shot through the crate.

NPCs can also jump through crates, but I forgot to test if players can as well.

I don't know if the devs care about niche stuff like that, but as someone who always uses cover, I can never not notice it.
