We already talked about this stuff several times, but to put it succintly:
- I doubt "sliders" will EVER be a thing, because these 3D models don't seem to be built with deformability in mind.
- What we can hope for, more realistically, is a getting a bunch of interchangeable pre-sets , on the other hand. You know, three different standardized heights for each model (plain scaling should do the trick), three different builds/body types, that kind of shit...
- More options for everything (faces, hair, bodies, voices) would help a lot to increase the variety and range, but that's a bit obvious and kinda redundant to state openly.
Personally I find the current system serviceable and adequate, but far from ideal.
I feel like the ultimate test of how good your character creator is should be something like imagining an archetype as your goal (i.e. imitating a popular character from fiction) and being able to consistently reproduce it with the tools offered.
Admittedly, not something that many games achieved. Dragon's Dogma comes to mind as a rare exception.
+1
Again, it's not about "This character creator is the have all be all character creator of all time.". It's about comparing it to other cRPGs.
KOTOR. Just pick from a preset group of characters. No body types, changing face features at all. No other races. Just human.
Neverwinter Nights. Pick a portrait and try to make your boxy pixel avatar look at least somewhat like it.
Solasta. Lots of options, but maybe 2 or 3 good faces and hairstyles.
You know, the reason so many BG3 avatars look alike is that some faces are more popular than others. I don't see very many avatars for BG3 with the not so "pretty" faces.
Again. Options would make all the difference.
Here's the test I use:. How many unique looking characters can I create. Look at my blog.
https://baldursgate3theafflicted.blogspot.com/2021/08/home.html?m=1Every character I created is unique from one another. Sure. Other players will have created similar characters, of course. Thousands of people are creating characters. But I can personally create dozens of unique characters. That's pretty good in my book.
