Another reason is the companions strangely enough. I almost always play a mage/sorcerer for my created character. But I ran into the problem that I like Gale and hate Laz. And as such I find that my choice was pretty much felt I had to choose playing a warrior. I know I really didn't have to but to maintain the balance of my party and not have to deal with Laz I needed a tank. A 5th party member gives me the option of playing something I want as opposed to something I think I need for functionality. Though in fairness and to give credit, this is one of the first games where I actually don't mind the companions instead of trying to find a work around to make 4 custom characters.
