You can pre-cast spells before venturing into the heat of combat. I agree it can be annoying sometimes (although I was never annoyed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />). You can pre-cast up to 3 spells, I don't remember how, though.
