Not all character development conversations should require a long rest. Why can't they talk on the road?

We do get exclamation points over companions after certain scenes, which I've missed on more than a few occasions.
And the banter, the banter actually has a lot of important information about everyone, It's actually more informative than most of the in camp conversations.
