One thing I have been thinking since day 1, but I keep forgetting to suggest is that I'd like the ability for my Tyrite cleric to free the souls in the Soul Coins. They MAY come in handy later to buy/sell with devils or something, but my Tyrite wouldn't do that. He'd take the opportunity to free the lost souls the first chance he got.

I'm hoping they allow Remove Curse to be used on soul coins in the future of the game. I think that would be really cool especially if they give us a kinda cool animation to go with it.

As obvious as it is to free souls, especially as Pala, I still think that the Soul Coins will have an important key function later in the game in the last act. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm speculating that one visits Avernus and then uses the coins for additional combat power (Mercs) or for magical devices necessary for locked gates etc. to progress further. Maybe you can also use them for a trade with Raphael? In any case, I think you can find and collect them at least all over the first two acts.

From that point of view, it might not be possible to destroy the Soul Coins, because it's game-deciding?

I can't remember the flavor text exactly. Is there exactly mentioned that it is about cursed souls. Couldn't it also have happened on a voluntary basis? For example, a clever Lich could use such a Soul Coin as this phylactery. Then a removed curse spell shouldn't work and in general he would be pretty hard to destroy permanently if no one knows the right one between several coins... I mean having a phylactery like that in a Soul Coin that is also hidden in a huge pile of coins makes it that much harder to destroy a Lich than if the phylactery were just hidden in a simple vase or something more obvious or an object that can be easily destroyed.

The souls bound in soul coins are both aware, and are suffering as part of that existence, and that is the entirety of their existence. A lich bound to a soul coin is just a soul coin - maybe they were a lich once, but now they are a soul coin, nothing more.

They have some fairly well defined rules for how they exist and function, and they are in fact fairly easy to destroy if that's what you want to do. Destroying a soul coin (which you can do as easily as destroying the physical coin with your weapon) frees the soul and releases it to go to whatever afterlife it would otherwise have before being claimed by the hells. Similarly, using up all of a coins charges via the proscribed methods - including simply asking it questions - Also frees and releases the soul. these are considered goodly acts, in terms of the tangible good and evil that are defined in the realms.

In the hells, the coins are also used as fuel for infernal engines, many of which power the various structures and settlements scattered about the hells, and which also power hellish vehicles. Using a coin as power to fuel something consumes and destroys the soul utterly. No continuance, no afterlife - even Wish might not do the trick here. So, if a lich wanted to pass his phylactery off as a soul coin, he'd be taking a large and pretty dangerous gamble for no real gain.

I very much think we should be able to use these soul coins as soul coins, since they are magic items that exist and have rules attached to them. We should be able to interact with them thus. The fact that we can't suggests that Larian intends to use them as plot maguffins instead... which is just disappointing, really.

Ah good to know. Thanks for the explanations. Then I also tend to OP's concern. There should be a way not to depend on the Soul Coins to free them.
