I think they change it from previous Baldur's Gate games to fit the 5e of dnd. So, they're not really inventing anything. Just being consistant with their choice to use the 5e of the dnd playbook. I personally like the current version
It's a fairly solid spell. It always hits and it forces a DC 10 CON check for each dart sent (possible concentration drop).
