The way it should work is:
- You have a clean shot and can select the target as an appropriate target fro your current position.
- The spell/attack/item/ability has 'these' mechanical effects and works 'this' way.
- Therefore, 'this' is what happens, since it was correctly input and used.
- Visuals simulate this in the visual world engine with physics etc.
- Sometimes something goes wacky with the physics and it doesn't 'look' like everything hit right; but mechanically, the ability had this effect, which you knew and which was accurately reports, so you know that it did
- The combat log reflects the reality of what happened, not the occasionally wacky visual.

The way it works in Larian games, including BG3:
- You have a clean shot and can select the target as an appropriate target from your current position.
- Visuals simulate this in the visual world engine with physics etc.
- Sometimes something goes wacky with the physics and it doesn't 'look' like everything hit right; shots hit obstructions that weren't listed, AoEs don't hit the figures that were highlighted, magic missiles hit the ground near their target and don't connect.
- The spell/attack/item/ability has 'these' mechanical effects and works 'this' way - but it is only calculated for the targets that were actually hit by the visual simulation, meaning that the player often does not receive the effects that the game itself reported to them that they would.
- The combat log reflects only the calculations that happened after the physics simulation, showing nothing at all for the 'packets lost' as a result of that simulation.

Interesting. I've occasionally noticed weird stuff happening with spells and ranged attacks but hadn't given a lot of thought as to why, but it makes sense now. I absolutely agree with your statement of how things should work, and that it's shoddy that they don't already.

No-one mentioned rules; it's less about rules and more about general forum etiquette... It was advice offered to help everyone make the job of data collection from the suggestions and feedback section easier for those who have that task.

On-topic is preferred yes. Sometimes tangents are natural and inevitable but there's just a general balance and common sense, and we help each other with that. However, insisting on derailing and going off-topic just cause, is probably not a hill worth dying on.

There is way to let curent Magic missiles look more like old one ... simply target different places on oponent body ... send one to his head, one to his chest, one to his leg, one to his hand ...
Its not perfect, but it works. wink

Like i said, to stay on topic. They should add concentration to magice missle to change it even more make it batter. that makes all the points i need to make. improving visuals was just first try at making it better it was hardly changed... They could change the arc as well make the balls go up in the air before they hit the target make it more of a Slam dunk kind of thing.

like this

my fav magice missle

yeah it works fine i never had any problem with hitting anyhting. how you hit obsticals i don't know.. But if the balls of force would go up first that would be even harder.

Did you mean to say that "adding concentration to magic missile would make it *worse*"??? Because requiring concentration when casting it is a strict nerf.
Also it makes no sense for magic missile to have concentration. It's an instant spell that is over the second after you cast it; what's there to concentrate on??

-1. It's a fast moving missile. It should go in what is basically a straight line towards the target. Maybe some slight arcing if the target is far away.

It would make it better because the spell would be more balanced compared to other spells of that same level It would add to harsh restrictions of spell selection. Magice missle wouldn't be so op anymore you coudn't just shoot it and still have buffs on.. You know more balance? in turn it would be better, don't you think? Combat balance is more important that player fun, right?!

You have to concentrate on hiting multiple target's that not easy thing to do.

Witchbolt can be instant spell one turn only as well by click on concetration and turning it off, but you can't cast it without concentration.. so that could work same for magice missle!

But if that bothers you too much they can add a bonus effect to magice missle, if you have concentration you can throw ONe magice missile at a target with your bonus action per turn.

Well it's a missile nonetheless and those fly in arcs and missiles normally go up first and down after so they don't hit things like trees.

1.) I don't concede that magic missile is OP currently. It is guaranteed damage, sure, but Sleep (if enemies couldn't wake others via shoving), Thunderwave, Chromatic Orb, and Fog Cloud are all great 1st-level combat spells too. Hopefully Larian will implement Shield too.
2.) Okay, so you're saying that it'd make the game better by being more balanced. I disagree. Concentration would make Magic Missile weak to the point of uselessness.

Witchbolt has concentration because it lasts for multiple turns, where you can deal the damage once per turn at the cost of your action. Magic Missile happens instantly; literally in the spell description it states "the darts all strike simultaneously." Adding Concentration to Magic Missile is a HUGE nerf - it will practically never be used beyond level 2 because there are so many better spells that would take up your concentration slot: Blur, Darkness, Enlarge, Fear, Fly, Haste, Hypnotic Pattern, Slow, etc.

As to your suggestion...that'd only be reasonably powerful if you could send 3 missiles when you cast the spell, and then 1 missile every additional turn. If it was only 1 missile on the first turn, it'd be incredibly underpowered for the reasons I said above - the Concentration requirement is too restricting. Even witchbolt would be almost strictly superior to such a a concentration-required-1-dart-per-turn-magic-missile.

The arc of a physical missile depends on it's speed. The faster it is, the less it arcs over a constant distance due to gravity. So the missiles could just be going very fast, and thus arc only a little.
Also, Magic Missiles are "magical force," so they might not even be affected by gravity! But this is a personal aesthetic choice for me and you, so not much more to say here.
