personally i hate the idea that a cat has the same stats as a Bear or frog but i always take spiders anyway
That's how I thought about it originally. Then I played a beastmaster in a 5e campaign and realized how mechanically compromised the subclass was. Viewing it through the TCoE lens shifts the idea a bit. Your companion is an animal infused with your magic. It's stats are an expression of your magic.
