A recent thread has me thinking again about what character I want to play when the full game releases.

I enjoy the sorcerer quite a bit, but one of the drawbacks is the limited number of spells available to the character. A level four sorcerer has five spells, not counting an extra one that comes from a draconic bloodline. And not counting cantrips, of course.

It's a careful decision, picking the right spells. Some for combat, some for utility perhaps.

I also find myself inevitably giving consideration to items I know are in the game. That impacts my choices more than I like to admit, unfortunately. For instance, I'm keen on grabbing something like scorching ray because of the Circlet of Fire. And I question whether or not I need Misty Step or Invisibility because those two things are so easy to get from items/scrolls/potions.

Right now, I think I lean toward the following five spells:

1. Chromatic Orb,
2. Sleep,
3. Magic Missile,
4. Misty Step,
5. Cloud of Daggers

...with a draconic bloodline of either White or Gold.

I'm still trying to settle on my choices.

Do you have five favorite spells that you think work best?

Have you got Gale in your normal party, are you wearing armour and carry a big sword or is it more a hide up top shooting arrows sort of build?

Luke Skywalker: I don't, I don't believe it.
Yoda: That is why you failed.

Picking high half-elf gold draconic sorcerer, will give an extra cantrip of your choice, disguise self (handy for certain dialogues, but especially useful when picked before talking to the dead. It's the only utility spell I pick, because there is no scroll for it in the game).

I will always pick magic missile, burning hand, then sleep or chromatic orb. I've found that despite its usefulness, I don't actually use CO in combat, so for future sorcerers, I might just pick thunderwave.

2nd lvl spells are always shatter and scorching ray. You can get both an amulet and scrolls that let you misty step.

With both shatter and cloud daggers, btw.. be sure and try and make the companion before your sorcerer (and after the targets turn) use shove on enemies to get them in a nice tight group. xD Killed four goblins (a wounded lock and three archers during goblin boss fight) with one Shatter.

My favourites as Draconic sorcerer (I will never touch wild magic) would be Cloud of Daggers, Grease (black dragon bloodline,) Hold Person, Crown of Madness, and Web or Misty Step.

If I must do damage with this character then I use the cantrips, or on rare occasions Magic Missile. The majority of fights I am better off using control spells and letting the non spellcasters do damage.

I don't concern myself with items too much because all the buffs to damage spells do me no good with my playstyle.

I don't always play a sorcerer, but when I do I always take Cloud of Daggers.

(so many chokepoints)

Does disguise self actually make a difference before talking to the dead? Cool if true.

Dead NPCs generally won't talk to whoever killed them, but if you use Disguise Self then they don't recognize you as their killer and thus proceed with the conversation.

I've found Disguise Self to be an incredibly interesting spell throughout the game. It even affects the prices you get at merchants, assuming you change their attitudes toward you.

That's a nice touch. I'll have to try it next time I install.
