So I was checking out the map we got for Baldur's Gate 3 :

So far we only have a small part of this map, which represent act 1 minus the underdark. If my guess is correct we will travel the rest of the map in the later acts.

Now here is a map of Faerûn, with a red rectangle to represent the perimeter of the previous map :

I really like variety in landscapes, the swamp and the underdark are probably my favorite places in the game. I can't help to think this map is a bit underwhelming. Sure we get Baldur's Gate but it looks to me quite uniform for a fantasy map, there are a lot of common tropes I like that are missing. No snowy region, no desert, no island, no lake, no volcano, you get the idea. The world of Faerûn is huge and exhaustive and there is a lot of room for choosing interesting places there. I am by no mean a lore expert, so am I missing something there?

If you turned that rectangle 90° it would be about the map of BG I.

How much this game will be about travelling around a world map is still up in the air to me. The EA areas might be just a prelude to a game set mostly in the heavily urban area of BG. That said I think there's a good chance we'll be returning to Avernus at some point, and there might even be some travelling to Netherese ruins.

I guess it will depend on whether it takes after BG I or II more.

Although I personally love consistency when it comes to variety of world areas to keep the grand scale of the world in check, I do hope that somewhere in the story we will end up in Avernus or Astral Plane and meet both Zariel and Queen Vlaakith. I really really wish to see them in person ^^

Grymforge felt plenty volcano-y to me. Isn’t there also
an island off the swamp?
I assume the mountain pass will be snowy.

What I’m saying is, no matter where the game is set in Faerun, I’m sure Larian will find a way to create varied settings.

Unless we get to travel across the world, i would also like to see focused enviroment rather than lots of variety ...
I mean, it dont really make sense, does it? How can you have desert, just next to the swamp, just next to the snowy terain, just next to the vulcano ...

Dunno ... seems variant enough to me. :-/
We got sandy beach, forest, rocky terain, wetlands, swamp, caves, mushroomy underdark, crystalic underdark, underground lake, ruins of buildings, and as Flooter pointed out Grymforge felt volcano-y enough to me aswell. :-/

Would be nice tho if Mountain pass (or some later part of the game) would bring us to some place where would be snow, so our Druid in his Polar Bear form would stop complaining that he feels baked like a pie. :-/

But adding various enviroment just to have various enviroment seems like a misstake to me. :-/

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown
Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are! frown

New Zealand

OK, so that's not actually true. But still, I love that country for having pretty much all the biomes in two small islands :P

Yeah I must admit I am biased for snowy lands and the overall green color of the map scared me a bit haha

Oh well, Larian already showed us a lot of variety and there is no reason to believe it will stop in later acts. I'll just hope for the best (and the coldest!)
