Ah, so you just not making any goddamn sense, responding to isolated out of context sentence but not the point that is being made. Question isn't "another companion Y/N" but "how many companions can there be, and how they can provide different narrative/gameplay experience". And yes I would be surprised if they went for another elf druid companio before "Jimmy the Sorcerer" or other missing archetype like monk. I might be wrong, but that's my take.

I think there may be a ah... language barrier type deal going on then, my friend. I read your posts over again and... I'm not sure how else to interpret them.

But if that isn't what you meant, then it isn't what you meant. smile

I know ...
I didnt even imply the question was this.

What i said was: Argument about cost of creating companion would be relevant IF the qestion would be this ... since it isnt, and we both agreed that it isnt ... argument about cost of creating companion seems irellevant to me.
Bcs, as stated abowe, upgrading Halsin to a Companion status, would be actualy a bit cheaper ... or at worse case scenario just as expensive as creating Jimmy the Sorcerer.

Therefore there is no additional cost, if they decide to upgrade Halsin.
Therefore i see no reason to bring up cost of creating companions as argument against Halsins upgrade.

I dunno what about it is "making no sense" it seems perfectly clear to me. O_o

This question seems a lot more tied to their personalities, than their race or class ...

I dont know any example from Baldur's Gate series ...
But just take Saruman and Gandalf:
- yes, they are both Wizards ...
- yes they are both Maiar(?) ...
- does that mean they are both the same and having one or another as companions in our group would not "provide different narrative/gameplay experience"? Certainly not!

I dont really know Jaheira personality, so i dont really know how different she is from Halsin.
Quite honestly i dont really think anyone know her curent personality. Yes, you may have played older games and know Jaheira from there, but remember that Larian have their own writers and 120y passed since last game ... that is lots of time to change some perspectives.

On the other hand there is one (not really related) old saying i made for my character in one DnD game:
"Kingdoms and Empires fall faster, than a Dwarf change his mind." laugh
Feel free to quote me on this. laugh

I hear you ... maybe even sort-of agree ...
But i dont think those things are mutualy exclusive.

I mean even Chubblot himself (maybe im wrong, but i concider that guy to be bigest dataminer of this game) stoped creating videos around Patch 5, since Larian simply started to clean their traces too good to leave anythin interesting for him to talk about.
So i believe (or hope, feel free to read it in both ways) that chances that Jimmy the Sorcerer, Jack the Monk, and Johny the Bard ... are all already done and prepared ... just hidden for final release. laugh

Then question for me is not "should we create Jimmy or upgrade Halsin" ... its only "should we upgrade Halsin"?
And feel free to disagree with me all the way you want ... but respond "nah, we allready have a Druid" is not sufficient ... especialy since we (and them, especialy them) know how much people want Halsin ...
And if someone actualy said it in Larian, that person should go kneel in the corner for at least 15 minutes and think about what he did!

I loved how everyone eventualy come to conclusion that "its totally fine if your DM allows it, wich they totally should, bcs its almost exactly the same animal as Cave Bear statwise, just lot more cool."

So ... i gues our DM "just allowed it". :P laugh

Yes, you are right, technically, owlbears are only no monstrosities in "our" version of Faerun. I like Larian's DMing decision, it's nice that this way, we can talk to the owlbear cub.

It provides the player a lot of options, but to me that's different from providing a lot of role-playing options. I've mentioned before the various entrances to the underark. Aside from the ruined temple, I just don't see it making in-character sense to find or use the other entrances. They exist for the player's sake, which is the case for a lot of things. You also get little opportunity to really define who your character is to other people. I don't feel like you really get to express things about your past, and Larian seems to want us to characterise ourselves as at least a little abrasive and unwilling to give grace in several occasions. Plus I also still think that the story as presented still fundamentally clashes with the clear desire Larian has for us to go explore everything.

Of course, a lot of this could certainly be my weird feeling that decisions not made via direct dialogue don't "count."

I am sorry that I did not have the time to answer yet, Gray Ghost. I have already started writing a bit about the role playing experience with one of my characters, but the text is already so long that I am afraid I would be hijacking this thread. I think I will make a new one, since I am also very interested in how other players experience role play in BG3. I hope that I will manage to do so in the next couple of days.

But I think too that there should be more diverse dialogue options for an even better role playing experience. There are a few dialogues where none of the options really fit my character, since they all go basically in the same direction. And I would prefer if there was, for example, an ingame reason why I should explore the Overgrown Ruins. As a player, I know that it makes sense, since we will meet Withers there, but it does not make a lot of sense for my character.
But other than that, I was pleasantly surprised that I had a lot of opportunities to play my characters the way I imagined them beforehand.

I saw the trailer! Can’t say it didn’t hype me at all!
It really did but It gave me some concerns… what’s up with the release date?
I was hoping they would give like exact day but they just said August in 2023.
Is this normal thing to do? For me it looks like they made a guess, when game should be ready and then will tell us proper date on last patch next year. When this patch could even be? How many months more to wait after this PFH…
Do you think delay might happen? Or they strictly sticking to August?
I am abit disappointed they did not give us “proper” date and it makes me feel abit uneasy -_-“. And makes them look abit insecure?
Would you be pissed out if they delayed game for 2024?

Yup ... they narrow it down.
Actualy Larian skipped one mid-step ... most companies i know usualy anounce year, a bit later quarter, a bit later month ... and only when everything is set and running, or they are prepared (or forced) to release it as it is ... they give exact date. smile

Depends on why would that happen and how it would be presented ... but in general, most likely not.

The only company that so far managed to piss me off about delay was Paradox interactive ... and even that was more about their attitude being like "we keep your money, dont tell you anything, and ban you if you will be complaining about this ... but keep thrusting us, we will let you know soon about how is it going" followed by so far almost 2y of complete radio silence ... than bcs of delay itself. -_-

No need to rush. I look forward to reading what you have to say. I think that in my last playthrough, I played a character that's a bit more in line with the options Larian offered, but I can see pretty easily going in a direction Larian hasn't prepared for in a future playthrough.

I feel like giving a release window like this is pretty normal. Or at least it's not abnormal. I don't think there's any need to worry. Larian's been taking their time with the game overall, and that's usually a good sign that delays aren't going to be an issue. But there's of course no way of knowing for sure, so don't fret about it.

And I also wish there will be companions to cover all classes, but don't expect it as: companions are really expensive to make, and we haven't been promised anything of that sort. IF Minsc and Jaheira are non-origin companions, that is already surprising revelation - expecting 3+ aditional ones feels like jumping a gun.

I feel like you are under an impression that I am against Helsin as a companion. I am not. I just think BG3 would probably need to double the amount of currently expected companions for such overlap to take place.

They can probably cover all the classes with the origin characters by allowing players to select from a short list when the character joins. Wyll, Shadowheart, and Gale seem pretty locked in class-wise, but Lae'zel and could be class changed to most other martials (especially barbarian) without much damage, and Astarion could make a bard or a ranger without much effort.

This is more or less how they did it in DoS 2 (although in Dos 2 the class had less RP flavor for the character).

Maybe im naive ... but he is requested so much, that i thing Larian would be (to be brutally honest for a second) fools to waste this opourtunity. laugh

If I thought about this game the way you did and sat around on a forum talking about it all day - that would cause me to do some self reflection. There are a lot better things to do than sit around writing about a video game (of all things) that you just legitimately do not enjoy.

No need to personally attack someone. If you don't like their posting, feel free to ignore it. Making commentary on their personal life isn't helpful, and it's unkind.

I... didn't personally attack anyone?

I said it seems like he hates the game - which it seems like he does.
Then I gave him some advice afterward - which is that if you hate something then why sit around and post about it?

I'm not trying to be a jerk. It is just an honest assessment. If I bought a game (specifically an RPG) and thought:

I get no roleplaying, no immersion, no replayability, no meaningful character development, and no enjoyable and memorable party companions.

And that the combat was:

interspersed with gimmicky and tedious

Then I wouldn't waste my time sitting around and discussing it. I'm not sure why you think that is mean?
You did make it personal, but whatever.

To address your uncalled-for "advice," it would be a very simply matter to keep me from posting about the game, and even from being on this forum: just get Larian to not call their game Baldur's Gate 3. They CHOSE to name their game "Baldur's Gate," and as a passionate fan of the first two of those games which have a very personal cherished place in my heart, I belong in this forum and do get to comment on a game that is, in my view, doing a grave disservice to those first two games that carried that title. I don't care at all for the D:OS games, but never once chose to post anything on their forums. Because they didn't matter to me, just like the hundreds of other games out there I don't care for. I even joined this forum only after BG3 was announced, entirely because of the title of this game. If not for that title, I wouldn't give a damn.

August in Larianism means October.

Well, Larian clearly doesn't think like you since they built and hired an entire studio dedicated to animations and many motion-capture rooms across other studios.

They just did a bad job on it.

It is all about immersion and verossimilitude. Key aspects of a true RPG.

We have been working with motion capture for years, with mocap-ready studio spaces constructed at our offices in Ghent, Kuala Lumpur, Quebec and Dublin.

Having multiple locations has meant that each team could be empowered to try out new ideas, experimenting upon and refining animations without having to wait for another studio to come online. Having spaces across the globe also meant we could capture data anytime over the 24 hour period, allowing for continuous development.

Watching the release trailer again, the paladin's smite (timestamp 0:56) seems to take two seperate animations to complete, much like other spells. My guess is smite will work like battle master maneuvers, with spell level selection pre-attack and no spell slot spent on a miss.

I'm not sure what that says about reactions, but unless they change the paladin wouldn't be able to smite on an attack of opportunity.

That's kind of bizarre to me given how average the animations are in-game. I have to assume they're working overtime to get those smoothed out, they're obviously going hard on the cinematic style and with an entire studio dedicated to it, you'd think it'd be much better than what it is. Hell, a game like Outriders, despite all of it's issues, has more organic looking cutscenes than BG3 does currently.

i hope all the animation budget isn't going towards cinematic trailers, because while they look incredible, we only see those once in a game.

Could also be a smite spell, not divine smite. At the end of the scene, it seems like the enemy is left glowing, which would fit with branding smite

Or ... they decided to separate them.

As it was pointed out by people, Paladin was quite anoying in Solasta, where you needed co confrim (or deny) Smite for every single strike your character do. :-/

So, if Larian would concider this ...
They may decide to make smite just as Battlemaster manouvers (or Sneak attack) are right now ...
And make separate button "+ use smite" into reaction ... i mean, if we will be confrimmind AOO, there is no harm done if there will be 3 buttons saying "no", "yes", "yes, with smite" ... instead just "yes" and "no" ...

Sure, Paladins would loose change to fish criticals for their smiting, but speaking for myself, that is cost i would be willing to pay ... it allways seemed kinda weird to be honest.

I totally get people who dislike BG3 right now.
I also totally get people who love the game.
Both should equally have a voice in this EA.

One point I would like to make though:
Its very easy to say you love something and change NOTHING (even if its quite bad...or too good), versus saying you hate it and having to redesign/change it for the best. So please everyone, try to bear with those who dislikes the game.

I dont love the game, I dont hate it...As a past Baldurs gate/2 fan (still play those games...). when I played in my teens in the end of the 90s...
I am just disappointed.

It just reminded me of the bowl of goat's milk that old Winthrop used to put outside his door every evening for the dust demons. He said the dust demons could never resist goat's milk, and that they would always drink themselves into a stupor and then be too tired to enter his room..
