Known issues

Any issues that start to become commonly reported should be listed here, with any fixes or workarounds, and whether additional information would help investigating the cause (saves, CrashDump files, etc).

This is not game related, but if you do not at least get an auto reply after contacting support:
- Rarely support replies bounce due to invalid email (especially typos when using the support form) or full mailboses, etc.
- Email sent to the business email address can rarely not contain the original email when forwarding; sometimes this can be gotten by replying to the email, but usually not.
- Outlook email accounts can show up as outlook_<long series of letters and numbers>@outlook.com. Sometimes replies will still go through, but usually not. See this Outlook.com support topic for details.

With the Baldur's Gate 3 Companion Twitch extension, the poll function for dialogues does not work, which will be fixed for the full release of the game. One person reported that refreshing the stream each time they wanted to enable a poll helped, if viewers also refreshed to be able to vote (so not a very practical workaround).

The dialogue can appear blocked after rescuing Halsin, with no dialogue options after a certain point.
You should be able to press '1' or the Spacebar to advance the dialogue. Switching to a different party member and then back may help, as well.
If not, try right clicking in the bottom centre of the screen, where the dialogue options should be.

After hotfix 3 there was an issue with the Steam version incorrectly giving a data mismatch warning in the launcher, due to a problem with the file it was using to compare against. This was fixed early the next morning, but in several cases the launcher did not get the updated file, so the warning persisted (with the files below flagged as 'Altered/Added files').
bin\bg3.exe
Data\Localization\English_Animations.pak
Data\Localization\Voice.pak

In that case, in the %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Launcher\Cache folder, deleting the 4.1.1.2154614_steam_manifest.xml file should get the launcher to replace it with the updated version the next time it is started.

In some situations, doors that are open can appear closed after leaving the area and returning, long resting or reloading a save. In this case, interacting with the doors will close them, and a second interaction will get them to open and show as open. In combat the doors can be treated as open for NPCs to shoot/target through, but are treated as closed for the player characters.
There is a door near the start of the chapel near the Ravaged Beach, which depending on how you enter, can appear to be closed the first time you enter the area. In that case a save and reload would show the door as open.

Issues caused by mods:
  • crash when opening the inventory, empty tooltips
  • can not change gender in character creation (the male icon can be selected, but the model doesn't update)
  • Identity option missing from character creation
  • getting stuck in the save screen when overwriting saves
  • UI buttons unresponsive in the game menu
  • character model or textures missing in character creation

See below for details, but to remove mods:
Copy the line %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods into the location bar in Explorer and hit Enter, then delete the contents (or move them elsewhere).
Also check the 'Mods' and 'Public' folders in the '..\SteamApps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data' folder, etc; if present, both folders are safe to delete.

After hotfix 3, the launcher for the Steam version gave a false data mismatch warning, due to a problem with the file it was comparing against, which was corrected.

The third hotfix (Jan 26 2023, 4.1.1.2154614) includes (among other things):
  • A fix for a crash in multiplayer groups of 3 or 4, primarily when when listening to dialogues.
  • Fixes for a couple issues which could cause a crash on Startup with the Vulkan version, or a crash when loading into the tutorial.
  • A fix for an issue that could block saving ('Mid-dialogue saves are currently disabled'), while not in a dialogue.

The second hotfix (Jan 17 2023, 4.1.1.2122596) includes:
  • A fix for an issue that could cause a crash when loading saves made after a certain point. In this case saves which already crash when loading can not be fixed, but the issue will not reoccur from the last working save.
  • Fixed Dror Ragzlin being able to react to crimes that were out of range or line of sight.
  • Playing an instrument badly in front of NPCs no longer prevents them from speaking to you again.

The first hotfix (Dec 22 2022, 4.1.1.2084795) includes:
  • A fix for a characters receiving damage when throwing a weapon.
  • Potential fix for the issue where the screen could be randomly filled in black (or more rarely white) on some systems. Update: as of the second hotfix this has not been reported again, so the fix appears to be confirmed.
  • A fix for the French localisation issue with unsupported characters in the default manual file name (rather than the playtime), which could cause saving and reloading to be disabled, possibly file system errors, a hanging loading screen at the end of the tutorial, and possibly freezing or crashing when trying to quit the game. Before the hotfix this could be avoided by deleting or replacing the unsupported characters before making a manual save.

There was a small update (on the patch 9 release day) to fix an issue with Steam not installing the required redistributable, leading to a .Net error when trying to start the launcher.
That is covered below, but manually installing the Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime entry 6.0.11 or above (from the Steam install folder or this download) would generally help.
