I just started with a paladin, was attacking the General whathisface (flaming sword guy) and after we killed him, the mindflayer went hostile and the turned around and blasted my party (fortunately only sent 1 unconscious - which was extremely lucky), managed to get them back up and kill him (and grab the sword) and was then almost killed by the two lvl 5 cambions that arrived...but escaped...quite thrilling BUT why did he go hostile? I'm sure I didn't attack him? Is this some new behaviour - because I disobeyed? Or because I'm a paladin?

It always attacks you if it no longer needs you to reach the transponder = Commander Zhalk is dead
It is actually the most min maxed approach to kill the devils while keeping the MF alive, because when it turns hostile - it yields XP on death.

Hello yes, I noticed that one time yesterday. He wiped my team in seconds. I tried again and brought one character closer to the commands, in case I have to activate them in emergency, but he just progressed to to monsters and was trying to kill them.

He expects that you go to the commands, so if you don't, I presume he considers you as an ennemy.

Yep, agreed that the mindflayer always went hostile if there were no other enemies around. Though in my new playthrough Commander Zhalk wiped him out when I'd only just got to the top of the stairs near them. I wondered if the balance of this battle had been changed again, but sounds like I (or he) was just unlucky with the rolls.

Yeah unless you cast shield of faith and throw 1-2 haste potions at the MF - the battle is in favor of the cambions and devils.

I only tried getting the sword once before ( a few days ago, pre this patch) - and the MF didn't turn on me after I killed Zhalk then. No idea what I did differently this time. Anyway, they both died in the end. Killed by 3x 1st level characters, which is totally unbelievable :o

This, you are going against their order, which shows that you are not enthralled (so, it shows that you are not with them).
