Wouldn't worry about the <sequels> and <genre> lingo nowdays...everything is pretty much a reboot. Including movies. Some are great, the majority are trash.
The IP is used to for marketing and buzz; Easter eggs here and there. Thats all. Originality is rare.
Genres have been rebooted to include everything basically. There is no more specific distinction. This specificity probably hampers sales.

It just reminded me of the bowl of goat's milk that old Winthrop used to put outside his door every evening for the dust demons. He said the dust demons could never resist goat's milk, and that they would always drink themselves into a stupor and then be too tired to enter his room..
