Things to note: I killed Gale and every other follower that is not with me currently. I haven't interacted with anything of Gale's but I did loot him. I was doing the trick where you pickpocket and you teleport to your camp to blow off heat from you.
Edit - I killed Gale before having him be a follower. He was killed RIGHT where you first meet him. He was not a member of my party and had no affiliation with me. Pretty crazy magic if he can kill anyone that kills him.
Basically there is no way for me to continue with this save. It won't let me teleport out to avoid having to sleep, and when I return to the main world, it claims I have been defeated but clearly I'm not.
