There is this guy on Youtube who tried to make a proper sheaths to carry his sword on his back. There are some advantages to this (which would require a special custom made scabbard/sheath) but even him admits that there are some risks when carrying weapons that way (it's not as safe indeed, and not necessary historically accurate) :

Oh I'm aware of Shadiversity and that particular video. Because of him I can't ever look at swords on backs without thinking of him for years now
Looks like Larian does not care AT ALL about creating things that look realistic (in the reality of the universe). They do not seem to care aboyt anything else than "fun".
Considering how things went towards the opposite of dark and gritty realism since Patch 8, yes certain design choices are quite questionable and make me extremely confused. Like they cannot decide whether they want realism or fantasy, so it ends up being neither.
