I'm more of a roleplayer than a powerplayer...however :
As for a character... I was always amazed at how people can roleplay someone with different views on a world or opinions. Even if I create a character of a different race and gender, it is really interesting for me to feel in a different body and background in general, but it is still me at its core. I was trying to roleplay a Loth-Sworn drow one time, and it did not go very well. It was fun to be evil at first, but empathy still gets an upper hand. At the end of the playthrough, I said to a child who I saved before that his poem is garbage and I do not care about him, and his reaction made me think "Yeah, I feel like shit". Not to say about siding with Minthara and slaughtering the Druid grove...
This! Oh thank goodness, I thought I was alone on this 😅 Which I felt a bit ashamed of 😶
I do have so much respect and admiration for the people who can properly play a character that is drastically different from them.
I'm still learning 😊I do find it to be easier when inspired by something like a (sub)class or theme.
I love to immerse myself in the universe and it's easier to do so with character that I can identify with...well...to some extend.
So, it's not 100% a self-insert either and I like to have some variety here and there :
Things that are very consistent :
- Fey Ancestry : I just love the Feywilds 💚 and things related to the feys. In such, I systematically pick "Elf" as the race for my Tavs 😅. I would also love if the Eladrins were an option 💚!
- Leaning toward "Chaotic Good", sometimes with a little zest of "Neutral Good" or "Chaotic Neutral". I've learned that Lawful or Evil weren't for me. This means that I do tend to take similar path/decisions every time (but using different dialogue options according to their personality, see below).
- CHA based (that's just what I like and it's very convenient in this game 😁), but I would love to play Druid and/or Ranger as well (just not in BG3).
- Open-minded (I don't reject companions because of that, for instance).
- Sense of humor, which could be more or less whimsical (which will make it difficult for me to not play a Bard, or to multi-class with one level in Bard for the Tag options).
-...
Things that often vary :
- Is the character more prone to use Intimidation, Persuasion or Deception during conversation?
- Is the character anxious about their survival chances or are they more confident? This could impact how to deal with the goblins (at their camp or at the Grove), for instance.
- Does the character easily display their emotions (quick-tempered? open book?) or are their more reserved and keep a neutral tone as much as possible?
- Does the character feel self-righteous enough and/or strong enough to kill some of the evil doers on sight (only applied to my Draconic Sorcerer with the Duegars)?
- How blunt/assertive is the character?
-...
Honestly, I have this weird thing where it's hard for me to play different characters/paths through the same story/game 😳. It would feel (to me) like watching a "behind the scene" and it would break the immersion.
I usually have a "canon" and I stick to it on replay with some very small variations. For instance, in Dragon Age Inquisition, my character went through gender-swamping, changing other physical attributes and had another love interest...but everything else was the same.
I also have 12+ very different characters in GW2, so there are exceptions to this "one canon" preference.
The EA of BG3 was also an exception (given the amount of Tavs created, even an attempt being made at playing evil), which was a nice experience.
But I'll probably pick a "canon" Tav on full release 😅 That's just the comfort zone that I need 😁
Right now, I'm torn between my Lore Bard build and my Archfey Warlock build 😊
T.L.D.R. : My comfort pick is to stick to a "canon" character that I've created which shares similarities with me (especially when it comes to moral and world views) but I do enjoy, every now and then, trying to go out of the confort zone with certain games.
EDIT : companions do offer the opportunity to roleplay characters that I wouldn't typically play/create which I wholeheartedly enjoy ^^ 💛
