Solution, I guess. The very next time I went to camp there was a cutscene where I now mysteriously had the artifact in my possession. When I interact with the artefact it seems to behave with me in the same manner as it did with Shadowheart. I guess this is working as intended?
Well, it’s good that it sounds like the game has defensive programming to make sure you can't lose the box and it will jump to a character who needs it. But still, your problem shouldn't have happened in the first place!
Normally, if you enter the goblin camp without SH the artefact jumps to you, so I guess this is similar. And in that case you can have a chat with her back at your camp about it and ask if she wants it back. I'd be interested to know if you get this conversation option with her in the new permutation you've found?
