Larian wants you to attack and drink potions and die rather than spend your turns dodging.
You can then buy a cheap res from a dead god who hangs out at your camp. Because... dead gods need pocket change.
Or maybe your companions also get fun active actions when they help you back up 15 times in the same fight.
