Having played through the game a couple of times, I do think that he needs a little bit more to let all the disparate aspects of his background and behaviour come together. I remember that way back in the earliest patches, I thought Wyll was just a commoner, and the noble stuff came up and just left me confused. So things have been cleared up at least somewhat since then. hopefully it keeps improving. It feels like everything we need to know has been presented to us, but it's just... a bit of a mish-mash at this stage.
