Yes, it is a bit suspicious if someone you know as a maybe not very talented fighter who is also not very disciplined suddenly becomes a famous folk hero known for his swordsmanship 😁

Indeed! And I suspect that there might be more to the story of the raid where Wyll lost his eye. I can't recall what he says about the raid exactly, but was he in the Flaming Fist at the time? Did he somehow screw up and she knows and blames him for deaths of civilians and/or his squadmates? That would perhaps help explain why she can't see him as a hero.

I cannot recall it either, but if he was, it would be possible that he screwed up, unintentionally, he does not seem to have been a model Flaming Fist at that point. And he tries to make amends now.

Maybe i was just hoping for some less typical story. smile

I think both solutions are fine, I am very curious to know what really happened 🙂
But even if Wyll did make it all up, I think he truly wants to help others.

I like the fact that we are discussing and speculating about the motivations of a video game character.

Personally, I think that Larian's writers do a very good job, the characters are nuanced and complex enough that we do have something to think, talk and speculate about 😀

If anything should Wyll have one level of Rogue as well? Per his back story…

I dont think he did. smile

Its more like ...
Well, i just love stories about tricksters ... that will fullfill your wish, just never in the way you would like it. laugh

What i would like would be something like:
Wyll had one wish from Myzora, in return ... he would seal pact with her.
His wish was "i want to be a hero" ...
And so SHE by her own malevolent will, made him "a hero" by spreading false tales about his heroic deeds.

But he would find out (sooner or later) that he actualy like being called a hero, so he travels the world trying to live up the legend she created for him ... and so far, failing horribly ... bcs he still dont understand that true hero doesnt do what they do for fame and glory. smile

Such characters are perfect for tragic end, when they finaly do some selfless act (usualy self-sacrifice), just for the sake of actual good ... and not their own gain. smile

I wonder if i can find any example ...
Prince Lir, from Last Unicorn movie ... that would be quite close.

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown
Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are! frown

I obviously don't know the whole story I am guessing. This is not a complaint, it's an honest and very curious question.

I think the implication is that he was once a very powerful wizard (perhaps even a Chosen of Mystra?) but that the orb, or the magic he needs to expend to restrain the orb, has drained him so badly that he's effectively been reduced to level 1.

EDIT: In the, probably unlikely, event of him having been an actual Chosen of Mystra during the Second Sundering, it is also possible that Mystra's turning from him was not merely a personal rejection but also involved removal of additional powers granted as the result of his status of Chosen. With the end of the Second Sundering, I believe many gods removed powers from their Chosen though I'm not sure if Mystra was one of these. But the timelines would line up I think, as that would have been a handful of years before BG3 takes place. Though if that happened, it would have been pre-orb, so he'd still need to have been powerful enough after that point to at least try to access the Netherese magic.

Well considering all of them complain about suddenly feeling weaker than they used to be, i have to disagree. smile

For the first time in a while, I just happened to come across the scene in which Gale talks about his loss of power. He does seem to very clearly attribute this to what went on with Mystra and his actions to win her back, and doesn't mention the tadpole at all. In his case, at least, I'm going to stick with my theory that the tadpole hasn't impacted his power level until firmer evidence otherwise appears to force me to change my mind smile.

This conversation for my character was before Gale had told her about the orb, he had only said he needed magic items for a "condition". So there does still seem to be a bit of room for debate about how far his power loss was due to loss of Mystra's favour and how much to his near-death from absorbing the Netherese magic, as he wasn't going to be able to be completely open about that in the conversation. Still, if we take what he says here at face value, his loss of power sounds like a punishment from Mystra for his foolish and dangerous actions to attempt to win back her favour.

So first off, I don't recall any companion claiming the tadpoles de-powered them from what they used to be before. If there are conversations to that effect, I'd be interested in knowing more as I don't recall any such thing.

So this is my take on the Lvl 1 issue:

Lae'zel: she comes off to me as book-smart so to speak from her training but woefully unworldly and kind of naive. She ascribes a lot of noble purpose to the Gith and her Queen that just isn't realistic. (She has seriously drunk the kool-aid.) We also have no explanation as yet as to where she was when she was abducted or otherwise how she was on the ship. She will point out her creche up in the sky so I think it plausible she was abducted from there. This would explain her lack of experience and practical knowledge. She was the star pupil who memorized the textbook but has yet to really put any of the theory she learned to the test. She was abducted before her training was completed.

Gale: As others have mentioned, he had his tryst it seems with Mystra, got spurned, and now has a bomb in his chest. Either, (or both!), could account for his lack of juice. I can buy his claim of having been more powerful once. We may yet find out it is less true than we think but I'll go with it for now.

Wyll: I view him as we might say here in Texas, 'All hat and no cattle'. I think his reputation far outstrips his actual deeds. Maybe a couple of his exploits have a kernel of truth to them or were facilitated by Mizora to entice him with the power he might one day wield as her servant but I think most of it is hot air. That said, I do think the one true thing of him is his desire to be seen as a hero and live up to his inflated reputation. He should arguably be a Pact of the Blade too in keeping with his persona.

Astarion: He may have been around for centuries but he's been a slave on a short leash. His 'experience' is all as a seducer and ratcatcher. So you could argue his skills should in some way reflect those aspects, but an adventurer with real levels he is not.

Shadowheart: She's had her brain erased and is potentially a mindwiped cleric of Selune. If so, it is no wonder she is low level. She's had her brain formatted and her divine connection hijacked. My theory is that she is indeed a captured Selunite and the tadpole and it's magic is slowly eroding what the Sharrans did to her. In time, she will start to remember and have an internal conflict between her real self and her programmed self. Which wins out will be part of the RP with her as the game unfolds. She'll either regain her old self and memories or reject them as some aberrant effect of the tadpole.
