Possibly, Tav being be a supportive friend first might be what makes them special to Wyll because... he doesn't have any.
I actually like the romance scene when you just keep him company. He does tell Tav they can't move forward before Mizora is dealt with. It feels very genuine, which Wyll as a man is generally not.
It's not necessarily bad to have a relationship where you're someone's best friend first and lover second. It's a nice contrast to Astarion's and Gale's romance. If they go further in that direction, I certainly wouldn't mind it.
It's clear what most companions see in Tav (Astarion, Wyll, even Lae'Zel). Gale, I've never been quite able to trust since you're just... someone. Gale also, unlike Wyll, can emotionally deal with being a lone wolf. Wyll, I feel is someone who absolutely needs human contact.
